Proposed Salmon and Sea Trout Angling Regulations for 2013:

Fergus O’Dowd, TD, Minister of State at the Department of Communications, Energy and Natural Resources, gives statutory notice of his intention to make the Wild Salmon and Sea Trout Tagging Scheme Regulations, 2012 to provide for the management of the wild salmon and sea trout fishery by Inland Fisheries Ireland from 1st January 2013. A copy of the draft regulations (Wild Salmon and Sea Trout Tagging Scheme Regulations 2012 ), which is available on the Department’s website and at the link below, is open for public inspection at the offices of the Department in Cavan and also at the offices of Inland Fisheries Ireland.

Any person may submit objections to the draft regulations at any time during the period of 30 days concluding on 08 December 2012, either to the address below or by e-mail to inland.fisheries@dcenr.gov.ie

There are a number of proposed changes to the Salmon and Seatrout fisheries here in Donegal from last year.

Spring Salmon Lackagh 2006

Into a February Spring Salmon on the Lackagh 2006

The Lackagh system in Creeslough is proposed open again on a catch and release basis from the 1st of January with angling only with a single barbless hook fly or spinner. This is the first time since 2006 that this once prolific spring salmon system has been open to local and visiting salmon anglers and is to be greatly welcomed.
Other systems that are due to open later in the season with changed regulations from last year include the Clady in Gweedore, which could open with a takeable quota of 120 fish for the season.

The Tullaghobegly in Cloghaneely is proposed to open with a takable quota of 99 fish for the season and the neighbouring Ray river is proposed to remain open on a catch and release basis.

The rest of the Salmon and Seatrout systems in Donegal are proposed to remain the same as last year with only varying changes to quota amounts.

Unfortunately, the once great Lennon system is deemed to remain closed to Salmon angling for a 7th season and as I have said before, the revenue to the local economy from this system being open on at least a catch and release basis would surely outweigh the justification of keeping it closed in these difficult economic times.

Salmon anglers – please remember to return your logbook and unused tags. IFI would like to remind all salmon & sea trout anglers who have not sent in their 2012 logbooks & gill tags that they are now due for return.

If you have not returned them already please send them back now using the pre-printed envelope. In the event that you have lost or misplaced your pre-printed envelope you will find the address for return near the top left corner of your salmon licence.

Lough Na Tooey Rainbow Trout Fishery, Creeslough:

The Lough angling times have now changed to the winter opening hours of 10 am to 4 pm.

The Club would like to ask anglers to mark their permits with catch results and post them in the letterbox mounted on the railing in front of the boat moorings, this will assist the club in monitoring stock levels in the lake.

Permits and boat hire is available from Lafferty’s Filling Station above the Lough In Creeslough. For more Fishery information , please contact Gerry on 0870550806 or log onto their website.

If you or your Club have any catches or events for mention, please contact me here at the Angling Centre on 0872929888 or Email jmclswillyflies@eircom.net.

Lough Na Tooey Rainbow Trout Fishery, Creeslough:

Gerry Friel from the Creeslough and District Angling Club reports that Lough Na Tooey is also fishing well, despite the near continuous Easterly winds tending to put the fish off the feed. Early morning and late afternoon/evening brings the best surface activity, but the fish are tending to take just in the surface film. Dry Klinkhammer-style patterns work best for this scenario, but any small Duster type dry fly will pick
off good fish.

Some of last weeks’ successful anglers included Jonathon McCorkhill and Mark Holmes with 5 fish up to 3 lbs between last Wednesday evening. Damian O’ Donnell also did well on Wednesday with 4 fish up to 4lbs and reported losing a much bigger one.

Meanwhile, despite bright sunshine and the aforementioned Easterly winds, the Creeslough Clubs’ wild brown trout fishery in Rooskey has been fishing its socks off for very sporting small trout, with the chance of a spectacular big brownie. There are 2 boats available for club members and visiting anglers to this fly-only water, keys/permits available from the Petrol Station.

Lough Na Tooey is now open on the Spring/Summer hour’s system with 2 sessions; 09:00 to 15:00 and 16:00 to 22:00. Permits and Boat hire are available from Laffertys’ filling station above the Fishery in Creeslough.
