Angling News – March 2015

Salmon Angling:

I am pleased to report that the main run of spring Salmon is now underway in the Lackagh system. There has only been light to moderate angling pressure up until the last 2 or 3 weeks. One very encouraging thing to report is the big number of well mended kelts, landed and released again on their second return journey back out to sea. This should be a good indication of a very good run of fish making it to the spawning beds last autumn and winter.

Creeslough Angling Club member, Tony Mc Gilloway landed the first fresh fish of the season in the last week of March on the spinner. The fish was estimated at 9 lbs. Tony also landed another second fish on Sunday the 29th of March on the spinner, estimated at 12 lbs. I have also had unconfirmed reports of 2 other fish by a day ticket angler on Tuesday, March 31st.

There were no other catch reports until Saturday last when Eunan Quinn landed a fine fresh fish of 9lbs on a badger tube fly from the Weir pool. Patrick Schoales got in on the act also with a beauty of 10 lbs on Tuesday. The fish fell to a Garry Dog tube fly in the Garden pool.

At the time of writing, the Lackagh is at a great height for the fly and plenty of fish have been seen running through to Glen Lough.

Permits for the Lackagh are available from the IFI on 0868182948 or 0872871512

The Gweebarra system opened on the 1st of April and Local Angler, Michael Devine had the first fish of the season from Peters’ Point on the fly. The fish weighed 8lbs and fell to a Green Highlander. The Schoales brothers, Patrick and Sean had a great day on Friday, April 3.
Patrick had a fish of 10 lbs and Sean had a fish of 9 lbs, both on a Garry dog tube fly from the flats and the furnace respectively. I have also had unconfirmed reports of 3 other fish from last week.

Permits are available from the old post office shop in Doochary.

The first fish of the season on the Cloghan Lodge Salmon Fishery on the River Finn fell to Chris Gallagher from Lisburn. Chris landed a very fresh fish of 8lbs from the Ivy Bridge beat on a flying C spinner on Friday, March 27th. John Gilfillan had a fresh run fish of 7 lbs on the fly from the Glenmore Stream on Sunday, March 29th. Ronan Mc Grianna from Co. Louth had a nice clean fish of 7 lbs on the fly from the Graveyard pool on Tuesday, March 31st.

Thursday, April 2nd was a red letter day for Jason Mc Conkey on the Ivy Bridge beat. Jason landed two fine fish of 10 lbs and 15 lbs from the Graveyard and Carlins’ respectively. Both fish fell to a green bodied willie gunn tube fly. John Gilfillan landed has second fish of the season that day also, again from the Glenmore stream on the fly. The fish was estimated at 7 lbs.

Warren Campbell from Limavady opened his account with a beauty of 9 lbs from the Grilse Streams on Saturday, April 4th. The fish fell to a size 6 Eany Tailfire fly.

Welcome to the “Last Cast”brought to you by John Mc Laughlin from the Lough Swilly Angling Centre.

Salmon Angling:

Shane Gallagher, Fishery Manager on the Drowes Salmon Fishery reports a big improvement in catches with ten fish reported for the week.
The first fly caught fish of the 2015 season was landed by Tony Mc Cabe from the Upper Mill Pool on Thursday morning. The 10lbs 6oz fish took a Willie Gunn variant. On Thursday afternoon Eddie Roulston had a 9lbs 4oz fish on a golden tiger rapala from the Grazings. At lunchtime on Friday Sean Mc Neice had a beautiful, deep fish of 14lbs 9oz on prawn from Rooney’s Turn, William Marshall had a fish of approximately 8lbs on prawn from the Mill Pool later in the afternoon and John O’ Donnell had a fish of around 8lbs on black flying c from Peter’s High Bank later in the day.

Saturday saw a lot of rods out on what was a bitterly cold day with some heavy wintry showers but no fish were reported. Sunday saw Jason Nash reporting a fish of approximately 7lbs on a black and copper flying c from Briney’s and Simon Harris recorded a fish of around 9lbs on a black and orange flying c from above the Turn Hole.

The heavy rain and unsettled conditions will probably see the water height rise even more or at least hold at a steady level.
For more Fishery information contact Shane Gallagher at the Drowes Salmon Fishery on 0878050806 .

Start of the new Salmon Angling Season on the River Finn:

The Loughs Agency will help local and visiting anglers celebrate the 2015 salmon fishing season in the Foyle catchment on the first day of the season – 1st March with events centred on the River Finn.

The Loughs Agency will also have information on and launch their ‘River Finn Angling Status’ report & ‘River Finn Development Plan’.

Following an opening ceremony on the river organised by Glenmore Estate fishery, the Loughs Agency event will inform visitors about the fishing available in the area, with representatives from local angling clubs and angling providers available on site at Finn Valley Leisure Centre, Stranorlar, starting at 10 am and running until 3 pm

Angling coaches will let those who haven’t tried fishing learn how to cast with spinner or fly. With their expert tuition everyone will soon be confident enough to want to try fishing for themselves, with all casters having a chance to earn a CAST award, the new angling qualification promoted by the Agency. Fly tiers and lure makers will show the flies and spinners that work on local rivers, and highlight that with catch and release regulations remaining in place these must use a single barbless hook.

For more information on this event, check out the Loughs Agency website @http://www.loughs-agency.org or updates on the Loughs Agency facebook page.
