Angling News
Week ending Feb 26, 2010
Shore Angling:
It's been another fairly quiet week for shore angling in the North-West but we have heard reports of reasonable catches – mostly a mixture of flatfish such as Flounder and Turbot, and Coalfish and Whiting. No great sizes recorded for any of these species but enough about to make up a decent mixed bag.
The larger tides in the sequence offer the best chance for fishing in the coming days and as is almost always the case, the slower parts of the filling tide after darkness. While the tides are heading for neaps, fishing should still be good through Sunday night, with light North-West winds putting some surf on exposed shores. It's forecast to be quite cold at night so it might be wise to chose some of the deeper venues.

Salmon Angling:
Shane Gallagher, fishery manager from the Drowes reports that last week brought cold wintery conditions with a number of frosts and as a result the fishery was fairly quiet over the week with only a few rods fishing. Water levels have remained good and are still reading around 5.4 on the gauge at the Four Masters Bridge. Colin Gardiner recorded a fine 10lb salmon caught at 4.30pm on Thursday. The fish was caught on a black Flying 'C' from the corner of The Blackwater.
The weekend understandably brought a few more rods out fishing and despite the cold temperatures, the sun made conditions pleasant during the middle part of the day. On Sunday, Anthony Carty recorded a 9lb sea-liced salmon caught on a Flying 'C' from the Crooked Hole.
For info/bookings etc on the Drowes Fishery & Lough Melvin contact Shane Gallagher on 071 9841055 or see the website for all the latest news from the fishery.
The River Finn opens for Salmon angling on the 1st of March. Stay tuned for more information on the proposed regulations and fisheries costs next week.
